World wheat prices spiked this week, a hard blow for Georgia which imports 75 percent of its wheat. The newspaper Versia reports that Tbilisi has stopped importing wheat from Russia due to increased tariffs and is opting for cheaper, lower quality Kazakhstani wheat.
Kazakhstan, a major foreign direct investor in Georgia, signed an agreement last summer to invest USD 9 million in the rehabilitation of a wheat storage terminal at Georgia’s Black Sea port of Poti, in 2008.
