Opposition go on hunger strike

Five opposition figures began a hunger strike at a protest rally yesterday, demanding a repeat of the January 5 presidential election, free and fair parliamentary elections and the release of all ‘political prisoners.’ (more)

IMF warns against weakening central bank

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission welcomed the government’s macroeconomic and fiscal reform package but warned against “any erosion of central bank independence.” (more)

Foreign governments expressed concern at Russia’s decision to lift sanctions on the breakaway region of Abkhazia over the weekend, as President Mikheil Saakashvili called for national unity in the face of a “provocative, dangerous act.” (more)

Azerbaijan agrees to pay gas debt to Turkmenistan

Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed an agreement on March 5 that will see Baku pay USD 44.8 million for Turkmen gas it received in the early 1990s, after a 16-year dispute between the two countries over how much was owed. (more)

Russia to start uranium exploration in Armenia

A joint Russian-Armenian venture will soon begin exploration and mining of uranium in Armenia, following an agreement signed between the two countries on February 6. (more)
