“Polish president responded to current situation in Georgia”

Akhali Taoba reports on recent comments by the Polish president on Georgia’s conflicts:

“Polish President Lech Kaczynski expressed support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty because of the tense situation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

President Kaczynski supports the peaceful resolution of the existing conflict between Georgia and Russia and said that he also supports President Saakashvili’s plan, the goal of which is peaceful resolution of the conflicts.

Kaczynski called for Russia not to take steps that increase tension in the conflict zones. According to him it is very important to settle the problem in a diplomatic way with negotiations.

The Polish president also appealed to the international community to be actively involved in the process and try to settle the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.”



“Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia baptized newborns”

Akhali Taoba reports that the country’s spiritual leader baptized 300 newborns over the weekend:

“Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II baptized 300 more newborn babies at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The ceremony was held in the grounds of Svetitskhoveli. The ceremony coincided with the day of 12 apostles, celebrated by the Orthodox Church celebrates on July13.

During the liturgy Ilia II asked the apostles to protect Georgia.

‘We ask the apostles to protect our country by praying; to unite it and return our lost children and lands, save us from pride.’”



“Russia is going to capture Kodori Gorge”

Kviris Palitra reports that an opposition MP alleges Russia has plans to recapture Kodori Gorge:

“The head of the parliamentary faction ‘Strong Georgia-Christian Democrats’ Gia Tortladze says that Russia is going to capture Kodori Gorge in the near future.

The Georgian MP appeals to the authorities to strengthen security in the region.

‘The only thing that Russia can do is capture Kodori Gorge. Capturing Zugdidi and then entering Kutaisi is not possible for Russia,’ Tortladze said. The MP also drew attention to Russia’s building of a road from North Ossetia to [de facto capital of secessionist South Ossetia] Tskhinvali. Tortladze asked the government to give an appropriate response, otherwise he is certain that this road reach will Tskhinvali.”
