While most of Georgia’s agricultural sector is struggling despite stepped-up government efforts to revitalize it, the poultry industry appears to be faring well.
The newspaper Business Rezonansi reports there are 20 large and medium poultry farms and some 1500 small farms that altogether employ ten thousand people. Around 70 percent of eggs and 50 percent of chicken meat consumed in Georgia is produced domestically.
Production is up over recent years too, with official statistics charting a twofold increase in chicken meat between 1995 and 2005.
