In the event of warming relations between Turkey and Armenia the latter will insist on the urgent reopening of the Karsi-Gumri railway. Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has stated that technically this can be done in just a few days.
The Karsi-Gumri railway ceased operating in 1993. In 2008 Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan started constructing the Karsi-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway line which would connect Turkey and Azerbaijan by avoiding Armenia, which for its part desperately wants to reactivate the already existing Karsi-Gumri railway.
President Sarkisian says that the political situation between two countries could be improved and political good will and commitment should be present from both sides during this process.
