Armenia-Georgia joint project
Thursday, October 2
During the visit to Georgia of Armenian President Serzh Sargsian, after his meeting with President Saakashvili, agreement was reached to create a joint consortium to build a motorway connecting Armenia to the Black Sea coast of Adjara via the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia.
Currently Georgia is constructing a motorway connecting Akhalkalaki-Tsalka and Ninotsminda with Tbilisi. This work should be completed in two years at a cost of USD 170 million. The planned new motorway would be an alternative to the existing Tbilisi-Batumi motorway.
The two Presidents have expressed their satisfaction with the new road scheme and the willingness of both sides to successfully implement it. The project will be launched as soon as the relevant funding has accumulated.
The Armenian President wished Georgia stability, the achievement of which would be good news for Armenia as around 70% of Armenia’s foreign trade goes through Georgia. He also highlighted that many ethnic Armenians call Georgia home.
