The Patriarch feels better

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II is now undergoing antibiotics treatment after his admission to hospital. As Minister of Health Sandro Kvitashvili said yesterday at the Scientific Research Institute of Clinical Medicine where the Patriarch is receiving treatment consultation with doctors has taken place. “The Patriarch is undergoing antibiotics treatment. He already looks vigorous and is in a good mood,” Kvitashvili said.

According to Kvitashvili doctors will decide whether the Patriarch will continue his treatment in a hospital or be discharged after further consultations. The Catholicos-Patriarch entered the clinic last night with a high temperature. (The Messenger)



European court reports infringements of Convention in Shalva Ramishvili and Davit Kokhreidze cases

The European Court for Human Rights has reported that the Georgian Government infringed articles of the European Convention in their treatment of Shalva Ramishvili and David Kokhreidze, founders of the broadcasting company 202.

The court instructed Georgia, under the terms of Article 41 (just satisfaction), to pay the two men 6,000 euros (EUR), each in respect of non-pecuniary damages and EUR 14,694, jointly, for costs and expenses. As the court’s report, published on its official website, states, Georgia is to pay these amounts within three months.

The Court held unanimously that there had been:

A violation of Article 3 (the prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment) of the European Convention on Human Rights on account of the inhuman and degrading conditions in which the first applicant was detained in the punishment cell at Tbilisi No. 5 Prison;

A violation of Article 3 of the Convention on account of the second applicant’s detention in an overcrowded cell at Tbilisi No. 5 Prison;

A violation of Article 3 on account of the applicants’ placement in a metal cage during a court hearing;

A violation of Article 5 § 1 (c) (the right to liberty and security) on account of the absence of a valid court order authorizing the applicants’ detention between 27 November 2005 and 13 January 2006;

A violation of Article 5 § 4 on account of the applicants’ inability to have prompt access to a video recording used as evidence against them. (Interpressnews)



Conservative Party demands punishment of senior officials

Conservative Party member Kakha Kukava has published a list of 16 officials who he says should be punished for their role in the murder of Sandro Girgvliani, who was tortured to death by four officers of the Interior Ministry exactly three years ago after having a dispute with several officers of the Ministry

The Conservative Party plans to publish a list of other officials suspected of being involved in other high-profile murders in the future. (Rustavi 2)



Ex-PM objects to detention of his party member

The leader of the Movement for Just Georgia, ex-Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Noghaideli, has objected to the detention of his party member Paata Kaikatsishvili. Kaikatsishvili has been arrested and charged with drug possession.

The members of the party appealed against this ruling at the First Instance Court at the Kutaisi District Court today. Zurab Noghaideli asserts that the police planted the drugs in the clothes of his party member. The ex-PM threatens to fight the Adjara Government unless it releases Kaikatsishvili. (Rustavi 2)
