Georgian Technical University has a new Rector
Archil Prangishvili has been appointed the new Rector of Georgian Technical University, Akhali Taoba reports. He was selected by the 16 members of the Academic Council of the university. Before the elections another candidate, Paata Kervalishvili, withdrew his candidacy.
“At the elections the 16 members of the Academic Council gave their votes to Archil Prangishvili, all other candidates having withdrawn before the elections,” member of the Academic Council Dali Gogeliani said.
Former Rector Archil Motsonelidze resigned from his post due to ill health last November. Archil Prangishvili has been Acting Rector since then.
Chairman of Parliament visits Lithuania
Akhali Taoba writes that Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Davit Bakradze has left for Lithuania with a Parliamentary delegation. Their visit started with meetings in the Lithuanian Seimas. The main themes of these meetings were relations between the two states and Lithuanian support for Georgia. It was remarked that during the Russian-Georgian war Lithuania gave great support to Georgia.
The Georgian Parliamentary delegation visited an exhibition at the Georgian Embassy to Lithuania, where photos of protest rallies held in Lithuania to support Georgia during the war were exhibited. Davit Bakradze and Georgian MPs will also participate in Lithuania’s Independence Day celebrations.
What kind of ‘secret’ memorandum will be signed by Georgia and the EU?
Sakartvelos Respublika writes that a ‘secret’ memorandum between Georgia and the EU will be drawn up. It has become known that under the terms of this document the Georgian side will not be able to move in the conflict zones without the EU mission. The EU mission will also have the right to control Georgia’s military bases.
Opponents think that Europe does not believe in Saakashvili and is demanding more guarantees from him in order to avoid provocations. Meanwhile, the Russians are creating military bases on Georgian territory and our citizens are not protected.
Georgia demands the demilitarization of the occupied territories but as Givi Targamadze, head of the Defence Committee of Parliament has stated, it has no real importance where the Russian military bases are located because they can bomb any part of Georgia. The EU and UN are however worried about the construction of military bases in Ochamchire.
MP of the ruling party Davit Darchiashvili says that it is quite reasonable to treat this kind of memorandum as classified and there is nothing dangerous in this. He says the document fulfils a demand of the EU but it is within the framework of a democratic country to accept it.
