When President Saakashvili initiated the 5 lari state insurance programme which began on March 1, 2009 he supposed that by July 1, half a million people would have taken out one of these policies. So far however only 2% (10,000) of that number is insured.
The cheap insurance programme was devised by the administration to create relief for the low income segment of the population. The policy covers basic medical care and accident and emergency treatment.
