Emigrants often work as labourers

Recently more and more Georgians have emigrated from the country. This process is uncontrolled and its negative effects are already visible. Qualified, professional, educated specialists are leaving the country, creating a difficult demographic situation.

Research carried out by the International Organization for Migration suggests that about half of Georgian migrants are young men and only 5% of these now work in the profession appropriate to their qualifications. Around 68% of Georgian emigrants are involved in heavy physical labour.

Moreover there are certain Georgian emigrants whose whereabouts are not known at all. Deputy Minister for Refugees Levan Mkheidze states that the major factors determining the outflow of population are conflicts and social conditions, but resolving these issues is one of the essential aspects of Georgia’s domestic and foreign policies.
