More than half the Georgian population reside in rural regions and are involved in agricultural work. Unfortunately in the post Soviet period, agriculture’s share of GDP has continually decreased and there are no visible or viable plans to improve this situation.
In 2003 the agrarian sector’s share of GDP was 19.3 percent, in 2004 16.4 percent, in 2005 14.8 percent, 2006 11.3 percent and in 2007 10.2 percent. However 55 percent of Georgia’s working population is involved in this sector. Its production capacity is still very low and there are serious agricultural management shortcomings. There has been insufficient interest, as yet, in improving things.
