Some time ago the Director General of Georgian Railway, Irakli Ezugbaia, stated that the decrease in rail cargo turnover had been caused by the opposition rallies and threats to block the railways. The opposition responded immediately by saying that the strategy of the railway administration is to make the service unprofitable, go bankrupt and then sell the railway to Russia. One of Labour Party, leaders Kakha Dzagania, said this last week.
Alliance for Georgia representative Pikria Chikhradze has called Georgian Railways a money bag for the ruling National Movement. Georgian Railway provides the major artery of the country and plays a serious role in the functioning of the east-west corridor, transporting oil products and cargo from Poti and Batumi to Baku and back. It also connects the region by ferry to Ukraine and Russia, thereby demonstrating its importance for any administration.
