Migration a serious problem

Migration has become very serious problem for Georgia. Since 1992, out of a population of 5 million around 1.5 million have left the country seeking their fortune and jobs. If this continues the Georgian population will have been halved 50 years from now.

The authorities claim that Georgia’s birth rate has recently increased. In 2008 57,000 babies were born in Georgia, 8,000 more than in 2007. Experts however make calculations which present a less cheerful picture. Most of these new born babies are the first in the family, and birthrate only increases in real terms when third and fourth children are born to a family. Of the babies born in 2007, 90% were first and second babies.
