The Department of Statistics of the Ministry of Economy states that most of the registered enterprises in the country are in Tbilisi – 126,074, or 47% of them. Imereti is the second most popular business location, where 36,211 businesses are registered, or 11.6% of the total. Next comes the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region.
By the end of the first quarter of 2009 268,546 businesses were registered nationwide. In the first quarter 8,231 new ones were added. However the appearance of new or newly-registered entities does not necessarily mean the revival of the Georgian economy. Economic analyst Demur Giorkehlidze says that neither official nor unofficial data so far suggest that the economic situation is improving.
