Ukraine might prolong life of Armenian nuclear power station

During the visit to Yerevan of Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Fuel and Energy Vlodymyr Makukha the issue of modernising Armenia’s nuclear power station was touched upon. Ukrainian company Turbo-Atom is seeking to prolong the life of the station for a further 20 years, though it is known that Armenia has committed to closing it by 2016.

Makukha said that modernising and prolonging the life of nuclear power stations is a common international practice and quite safe, but should be conducted under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and according to international standards. Ukraine is ready to provide Armenia with the appropriate technological facilities and specialists to do this.
