Tourism has been declared a priority segment of the country’s economy. It suffered a lot as a result of the Russian invasion but in 2009 managed to revive, if not completely then at least partially. The overall number of tourists visiting Georgia in 2009 has reached 950,000 already, and presumably by the end of the year the number will be more than a million, thinks the Tourism and Resorts Department. This number presumably includes both foreign tourists and locals. The most popular tourist destinations so far this year have been the Georgian sea resorts, however quite a number of tourists have also visited Borjomi and Bakuriani.
According to official statistics there were up to 400,000 tourists in Georgia in 2004, over half a million in 2005, up to a million in 2006 and 1.3 million in 2007. International experts predict that there will be a big tourist boom in Georgia as its nature, people, climate, sightseeing and many more details could make Georgia a very attractive tourist destination in the near future if the country conducts a wise and efficient policy.
