Polish newspaper Dziennik Gazeta Prawna thinks that without Iranian natural gas the NABUCCO project is unrealistic. It says that Iran possesses 16% of the world’s natural gas reserves and Tehran is ready to sell 35 billion cubic metres of it annually.
There is an opinion in the EU that Iran could be the primary supplier of natural gas for NABUCCO. It is suggested that by the time that the construction of the NABUCCO pipeline starts the problems around Iran’s nuclear programme will have been resolved and it will become possible to conduct business with it.
In this view Iran could become the alternative supplier of energy to Europe, counterbalancing Russia. At present 1/3 of the natural gas consumed in Europe (around 485 billion cubic metres) is supplied by Russia.
