In the first 9 months of 2009 Armenia was visited by 423,000 tourists, almost 6% more than in the same period of 2008. Head of the Tourism Department Mekhak Apresian has stated that Armenia is visited mostly by persons from Russia, Georgia, the CIS countries, Europe, Iran and the USA. He also stated that more than 60% of these tourists are ethnic Armenians.
Recently more tourists have been coming from Turkey, Latin America and the Scandinavian countries. Apresian thinks that the forthcoming opening of the Armenian-Turkish border will further facilitate the development of regional tourism.
