Richard Morningstar, the US Special Envoy on Eurasian Energy Issues, stated during his recent visit to Bulgaria that the US excludes Iran participating in the NABUCCO gas pipeline project. He highlighted that his country supports Bulgaria’s efforts for the diversification of energy resources and thus backs the NABUCCO project. But it does not think that Iran is a potential participant, as apart from Azerbaijan the major supplier of this project could be Iraq.
Morningstar added however that if agreement concerning the Iranian nuclear programme is achieved Iran could be included in the NABUCCO project.
