Georgian railway transportation problems

For the last 2 years Georgian railway cargo transport figures have been decreasing. In 2007 Georgia transported 2 million tonnes of cargo. In 2008 the figure was 21 million. In 2009, according to preliminary calculations, it transported around 17-18 million tonnes.
Of course there are reasons for this, principally the global financial crisis and the August 2008 Russian invasion. However the first quarter of 2009 saw the nadir of the decline and in the second quarter the figures started to improve. The Georgian Railways management think that in 2010 this positive tendency will continue and the railways will transport up to 20 million tonnes of cargo.
