Cattle breeding problems in Georgia

Cattle breeding is a branch of Georgian agriculture with good prospects, as the country has very significant export potential in this field. This is proven by the fact that in 2009 more than 3,000 Georgian sheep were exported to the UAE. However this sector is also in crisis as the amount of livestock in the country is decreasing.

In the third quarter of 2009 there were a few more than 1.1 million cattle in Georgia. In the same period of 2008 the number was greater. The quantities of pigs and poultry in the country are also decreasing.

The decrease in Georgia's general agricultural production is largely determined by the fact that Georgian products cannot be exported to European markets as there are no quality control laboratories in Georgia compatible with European ones. The Minister of Agriculture has elaborated a special programme to improve the situation in this sphere.
