Georgian figure skater in 9th place
Georgian figure skater Elene Gedevanishvili is in ninth place after her short programme at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum. Elene had a very impressive beginning; she landed a triple toe loop combination and finished with a personal best 61.92 points.
Elene's supporters assembled at the Zugdidi Ice Palace yesterday to watch their compatriot perform at the Winter Olympics. The winners of the Batumi figure skating contest were among the spectators. (Rustavi 2)
Wind damage in Tbilisi exceeds GEL 1,100 mln
The damage caused by the strong wind has exceeded GEL 1,100 mln in Tbilisi, Deputy Mayor Niko Khachirashvili has told Interpressnews. Wind has damaged roofs in the city and repair work has already started.
"At first the roofs will be repaired or changed in blocks of flats and then in private houses", Khachirashvili said. He added that parks and stadiums have also been damaged by broken trees but the damage will be repaired in a few days. (Interpresssnews)
Labour Party addresses Chief Prosecutor
The Georgian Labour Party is accusing oil importing companies and the Government of artificially increasing petrol prices. The party's Giorgi Gugava sent a letter to Chief Prosecutor Murtaz Zodelava yesterday calling on him to investigate the quality of imported fuel and its price.
Labour named the companies it is accusing of having monopolised the oil business. It says that oil prices are not controlled and these companies raise prices one-sidedly. The Labour Party wants the Chief Prosecutor to look into this and bring the owners of these companies to justice. Rustavi 2)
Nika Gilauri in Qatar
Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri has left for Qatar. His visit will last until 25 February, Niko Mchedlishvili, head of his Press Service, has told Interpressnews.
In addition to Gilauri the Georgian delegation for this visit includes Giorgi Kadaghidze, President of the National Bank, Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili, Economy Minister Zurab Pololikashvili and Agriculture Minister Bakur Kvezereli.
The visit aims to attract investment to Georgia. Meetings will be held with the Emir and other officials. (Interpresssnews)
Parliamentary Commission investigating death of first President summons former PM
The Parliamentary Commission investigating the cause of death of first President of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia will question the former Prime Minister Temur Sigua.
Sigua is summoned to appear before Parliament today. The Commission also considers it necessary to summon Eduard Shevardnadze, the ex-President, for questioning. Bessarion Gugushvili, another former member of the Gamsakhurdia Government, resides in Finland and the Commission will question him there.
"Tengiz Sigua may give us very important information in connection with the case we are investigating. As well following up the information received from former Defence Minister Tengiz Kitovani and former Security Service head Igor Giorgadze, it is necessary to summon Eduard Shevardnadze as well," Chair of the Parliamentary Commission and eldest son of the first President Konstantine Gansakhurdia said. Nine years since murder of Giorgi Sanaia
Giorgi Sanaia, anchor of the very popular late night talk show Night Courier, would have been 35 yesterday. The journalist, known for investigating allegations of official corruption, was killed at his flat in Tbilisi in controversial circumstances on July 26, 2001.
The murder of Giorgi Sanaia at the age of 26 was widely believed to have been politically motivated and triggered an unprecedented outpouring of public grief and anger. He had one son.
Sanaia's family gathered at the grave of the popular journalist yesterday to commemorate him. Father Saba Theodore conducted the graveside memorial service. (Rustavi 2)
Noghaideli gives details of his visit to Brussels
The leader of the Movement for Fair Georgia, Zurab Noghaideli, has summed up his one-day visit to Brussels.
Noghaideli said at the briefing yesterday that he was satisfied with the meetings he held with European politicians and diplomats. He said the issues discussed were the political situation in Georgia, the pre-election situation in the country, the significance of the unity of the opposition, the situation in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, Georgia-Russia relations and the necessity of regulating the tension between the two countries.
