The Lithuanian media has published reports of statements by former Lithuanian Intelligence Service boss Mecys Laurinkus, quoting the Lietuos Rytas publishing house. Laurinkus says that over the last few years Russia has been developing a new regional strategy which would mean it establishes control over gas and oil supplies to central Europe and thereby achieves strategic dominance. Laurinkus says that there are around 3,000 Russian agents in Lithuania serving Moscow’s interests who have been rather active recently in small and medium-sized business and the mass media.
Russia is continually stirring up Lithuanians, dividing them into anti-Russian and pro-Russian camps, and of course its wants the pro-Russian segment of Lithuania’s population to become dominant.
