Some analysts think that Azerbaijani-Turkish company Quality Sugar has monopolised the Georgian market, dictating its prices to Georgian consumers. After a rapid surge in price sugar has gone down slightly and you can now buy it in the markets for under GEL 2 a kilo.
These price fluctuations are mainly determined. Recently sugar prices have fallen 45% internationally but in Georgia they have only fallen 20%. Encouragingly India, the world's biggest sugar exporter, is to increase its production.
Sugar is a high demand product in Georgia but consumption of it decreased in 2009 because of the price increases. How long will Georgian consumers resist their craving the sugar?
