Georgia’s GDP in 2009 was GEL 17.948 billion. This is a 3.9% decrease on the figure for 2008. Analysts say that if it had not been for donor assistance this fall could have been more significant.
There are certain details in the GDP figures which show that the Georgian economy is not very well developed. For instance trade accounts for only 14% of GDP, industry 15%, transport and communications 12% and agriculture only 10%. State governance is the biggest GDP generator with 16%.
The Georgian Government hopes that GDP will increase in 2010. Indeed, the GDP for the first quarter suggests this. Analyst Davit Narmania thinks that there are certain signs of a revival in certain economic sectors, but the second quarter has begun and we must examine developments carefully.
