Russian-based Georgian actor visits Gori

Georgians and Russians can't be separated, Russia-based Georgian actor Oleg Basilashvili said. The 75-year-old actor has returned Georgia after a 33-year interval and is in the Gori district with a TV crew preparing a programme to mark his birthday.

The actor's ancestors came from the village of Karbi in the August war-affected Gori district. The TV show is being shot in the village. Basikashvili is the most prevalent surname in the village.

"When I heard that that terrible war (August 2008) had broken out here, I could not rest. I gave an interview to a radio station in which I openly criticised the Russian authorities for their provocative activities. All this was very painful for me. I know that homes were razed to the ground in the villages. But it's not about those, it's about the people who died for nothing. I am grateful to those people who met me here. I want to wish all the best to them," Basilashvili said.
