Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway construction underway

An Azerbaijan Railways spokesman recently stated that the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway has entered its decisive phase. Different segments of this are being constructed simultaneously, in both Turkey and Georgia and this work, and the construction of Akhalkalaki Station in Georgia which has not yet begun, should finish by the end of 2011.
New segment will be a 105km long railway, of which 76 kms are in Turkey and 29kms in Georgia. The existing Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi railway is being reconstructed and rehabilitated to form part of this. Akhalkalaki station will also contain a special depot for changing Soviet gauge carriages to European gauge ones.
