Georgian exports increase

In 2010 Georgian exports have begun to increase, although imports still exceed exports by more than three times. In January-June 2010 Georgia’s foreign trade turnover was almost USD 3 billion, 18% higher than in the same period last year, exports accounting for USD 721 million of this and imports USD 2.231 billion. The biggest trading partners of Georgia are Turkey, with USD 496 mln in turnover, Azerbaijan with USD 299 mln and Ukraine with 287 mln USD.

Ferro alloys remain the leading export item, bringing in USD 129 mln so far this year. Next come automobile exports at USD 87 mln, then scrap metal. So far Georgia is mostly exporting raw materials but of course it would be better to export readymade products. Serious steps should be taken to reorient the country in this direction.
