The number of illegal labour migrants in Azerbaijan now exceeds 100,000, Sahid Mamedov, the Chairman of the center for Protection of Labour Rights has stated. He added that most of these migrants are from Georgia but some have no citizenship at all.
Official statistics claim the number of illegal labour migrants is only around 5,000, but in reality the figure is much higher. Emigrants from Asian and African countries who have entered the country illegally get jobs there and start working.
Azerbaijan is trying to take measures to prevent illegal migration, though international organisations are criticising it for doing so. There are registered labour migrants in Azerbaijan from 87 countries but the number of illegals still increases daily.
