John Beyrle: US does not recognise Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region
The United States does not recognise the independence of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, US Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle stated at a press conference held in Moscow on July 27.
The Ambassador added that despite differences on the issue of Georgia, Russia and the US will continue to conduct positive cooperation in the future. “We have always said that we do not recognise the independence of Abkhazia and the so-called South Ossetia region. We do have differences with Russia on this issue, but these differences will not obstruct the continuation of positive dialogue between us,” John Beyrle said. (Prime News)
Air Batumi to conduct Tbilisi-Batumi-Tbilisi Flights several times a day in August
Air Batumi will conduct Tbilisi-Batumi-Tbilisi flights several times a day in August. It says such flights will take place twice a day from Monday to Thursday and three times a day at weekends. The flights will be conducted from Tbilisi International Airport with a SAAB 340.
Air Batumi has been scheduling Tbilisi-Batumi-Tbilisi flights since 1 June and weekend flights from 2 July. Fares are from GEL 19. (Interpressnews)
Mayor's 120-day programme continues
The Tbilisi Mayor continues to monitor the projects being undertaken as part of his 120-day programme. Yesterday Gigi Ugulava visited an enterprise developed thanks to a 34,000 cheap loan. The Kapricho bakery has employed 20 people after being granted this loan through the mediation of the Tbilisi Municipality.
The Mayor`s Office launched the local business development project four years ago. Over 50 enterprises have accessed cheap loans from commercial banks with the help of the local authority. The programme is continuing and any business can apply to Tbilisi City Hall with specific projects. (Rustavi 2)
Labour Party defends interests of Energy Port employs
The Georgian Labour Party is calling on the Government to look into the problems of employees of the Energy Port Company. Giorgi Gugava of the Party held a briefing yesterday and reported the details of a fraud carried out by the Turkish company.
Gugava said that the company management had not paid the Georgian workers their earned salaries. He said the company managers had disappeared in April and since then no one has taken responsibility for the violation of their employees` rights. (Rustavi 2)
Meghvrekisi villagers demand restoration of water supply
Residents of Meghvrekisi have held a rally outside the regional administration building demanding the restoration of the irrigation water supply suspended three weeks ago. They complained about the damage the lack of water may do the harvest.
Administrators met with the protestors today and explained that the village was provided with water from the Nikozi dam, which had been closed for the past three weeks due to technical problems. Davit Khmiadashvili promised to restore the water supply to the village by today. (Rustavi 2)
Minister of Education and Science rewards schools where School Olympiad winners study
Minister of Education and Science Dimitri Shashkin has awarded prizes to the schools where the winners of the School Olympiads study. Based on the results of these a list of the highest ranking general educational institutions was created, which included 27 schools throughout Georgia and divided them into first, second and third ranking bands. Schools in the first band received 5,000 GEL, those in the second 4,000 GEL and those in the third 3,000 GEL. School infrastructures will be renovated with these sums.
The winners of the School Olympiad came from almost all the regions of Georgia. Many of these successful schoolchildren study in village schools. Specialised schools prepared their students well in technical subjects: Vekua Public School Number 42, Razmadze Public School Number 41 and Komarov Tbilisi School Number 199. The Georgian team for the International Olympiad was composed of children from these schools, and Georgian students won in this Olympiad as well.
Schoolchildren from Tsalenjikha, Sagarejo, Ozurgeti and Zugdidi took first place in Georgian language and literature, chemistry, history, geography and foreign languages. They were among 123 schoolchildren awarded prizes and diplomas by the President of Georgia.
More than 100,000 schoolchildren from all regions of Georgia participated in the National School Olympiad 2010. The Olympiad is designed to identify talented schoolchildren, encourage school reforms and support schoolchildren, teachers and the educational process as well as identifying candidates for the Georgian team for the International Olympiad.
