Azerbaijan to increase wheat imports

Azerbaijan has gathered its wheat harvest of 1 million 850 thousand tonnes, which is less than it was in 2009. The government is therefore obliged to fill up the gap by importing wheat from Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Agriculture asked the Azeri Ministerial Cabinet to cancel VAT on wheat imports, as well as on flour and the cattle fodder. Last year Azerbaijan had a record wheat yield – 3 million tonnes. But this year the country has suffered from floods and many fields were damaged. It is likely that the Azerbaijan government will decide to follow the Ministry of Agriculture recommendations and give the green light to make it easier to import wheat from abroad.
