CDM in Draft Constitution Talks

Giorgi Targamadze, the leader of the Christian-Democratic Movement (CDM) met with members of the Public Constitutional Commission on September 9. Discussing the issues of the new constitutional model, Targamadze spoke of the importance of consultations with the Commission. “To change the opinions with those we have visited today is important for us. We need to strengthen our positions for the upcoming parliamentary debates where we will have to prove our arguments,” Targamadze told the media.

The Public Constitutional Commission opposes the new constitutional draft. The members of Commission hope that opposition representatives in Parliament will consider their remarks at the Parliament. “We are meeting the CDM parliamentary faction to discuss our opinions about the new constitutional model,” Lia Mukhashavia, member of the Commission stated. “CDM is expressing its concern about the issue and our obligation is to clarify their attitude,” another member Mindia Ugrekhelidze added.

The members of Commission suggest that the draft constitution, which doesn’t match the declared ideas, should be rewritten before it is submitted to the Parliament for discussions. Giorgi Targamadze said that the constitutional reform should become a new stage for the development of Georgian democracy thus all the remarks concerning the draft document should be considered.
