UNDP Discusses Private Sector and Development in Georgia

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with financial support of the Government of Belgium presented the publication Public Sector and Development at Marriott Courtyard on October 26. The publication sets out the results of comprehensive research carried out in 2009 under the auspices of the Georgian Network of the UN Global Compact Initiative reflecting the opinion papers and summaries of public discussions of local and foreign experienced experts about the current situation in Georgia. It identifies the best way forward highlighting the role of business in the development of Georgia, strategic areas of the country’s economy and policy changes needed for economic progress.

Jamie McGoldrick, UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia spoke of the development of Georgia’s private sector as an integral part of UNDP’s ongoing program aimed at assisting the Georgian Government in developing new strategies for promoting sustainable economic growth. “In order to promote collaboration among different players in society UNDP has commissioned expert reviews from national and international authorities in respective fields and facilitated public dialogue to examine opportunities and discuss recommended courses of action necessary for moving forward,” McGoldrick told the audience hoping that the publication would contribute to Georgia’s efforts to meet both its economical competitiveness goals and its aspirations for greater social cohesion.
