According to ministry of interior information, during the first 6 months of 2010 there were 2260 road accidents in Georgia resulting in 306 deaths and 3399 injuries. Most of the accidents occurred because of high speed or drink driving, while few were caused by mechanical problems with the vehicle. Another contributory factor is the poor state of the roads. Experts believe that 60% of those killed would have survived if they had been wearing safety belts. From December 1 safety belts will become obligatory for the front seat passengers and drivers of all cars. Analysts are sure this will decrease the death toll.
