Russia brokered meeting of Azeri and Armenian Presidents

Under the sponsorship of Russian President Medvedev, Russia organised a meeting between the Armenian and Azeri presidents Serge Sarkisian and Ilham Aliyev in Sochi. There have been several such initiatives since 2008, the major achievements of the meetings not being steps towards the regulation of the Karabakh conflict but merely the prevention of a resumption of hostilities in the region. Armenian sources confirmed that the declaration of March 5, 2011 has the same content as that of the November 2008 declaration. Russia’s position is clear and unchanged – it is satisfied with a simple no peace – no war situation. Similar situations exist with the current conflicts in Moldova and Georgia, which are clearly beneficial for the Kremlin.
