Birth rate increases in Georgia

According to civil registry data the birth rate in Georgia has increased over the last several years. In 2006 there were 46 060 births registered in Georgia, in 2007 – 48 027; in 2008 – 57 263; in 2009 – 61 839; and in 2010 – 62 726. In 2010 52% of births were male and 48% were females. There is also an increase in the number of families with three or more children. In 2009 the number of families with a new third child was 6 153, whereas in 2010 the number was 6 807.
The number of marriages has also been increasing since 2005 when there were 18 141 registered; in 2006 – 21 876; in 2007 – 25 925; in 2008 when Russia unleashed war on Georgia – 31 310; in 2009 – 31 319 and in 2010 – 31 464. This data is from the civil registration of married couples; there may well be more couples who marry in church and do not register.
