No Danger of Radiation in Georgia

Radioactive materials emitted after the failures of Japanese nuclear plants cannot reach the Caucasus, according to Levan Gogua, senior specialist of the Nuclear and Radioactive Security Service of Georgia, 24 Hours reports.

“Georgia does not face any danger even in the worst case scenario of events in Japan. There is only a theoretical danger,” Gogua said.

Several blasts occurred in the Fukushima nuclear power plant after the 8.9-magnitude quake hit Japan on Friday. Despite the increased radiation in Japan, Georgians residing there have not requested evacuation from the Georgian Embassy, InterpressNews was told by Revaz Beshidze, Ambassador of Georgia to Japan .

According to Beshidze, a few citizens will return to Georgia, though this is not related to the radiation in the country.

“Contradictory information is being released in Tokyo regarding the radiation. The Georgian citizens are in a safe place,” Beshidze said.
