CNN travels to Georgia for a week of live programming

Tune in to Prism every night at 2030 for the network’s Eye On strand, examining the Eastern European country taking big steps on the global stage


From 27th June to 1st July CNN International visits Georgia to focus on the stories that are shaping a country of rich cultural and historical significance whose key geographical location connecting East and West on the Old Silk Road makes it increasingly important on the global stage.

In Eye On Georgia – part of the popular strand which has already visited India, Germany and Ukraine this year – CNN’s Paula Newton is live in key locations across Tbilisi every night of the week at 2030 local time, presenting a mix of packages and interviews as the network takes stock of the opportunities, innovations, challenges and traditions in this country redefining itself eight years on from the Rose Revolution.

Georgia, with its unique position at the crossroads of Europe and Central Asia, is taking steps to grow its economy, fight corruption, improve its education system and boost its tourism,” said Mike McCarthy, vice president of coverage and feature programming for CNN International.

The week will feature a mix of interviews, packages and live reporting. In a number of special features CNN’s Paula Newton profiles the farming community’s reaction to news that the government has invited South African farmers to boost the country’s agriculture industry. She visits the flamboyant new glass Interior Ministry, built as a symbol of transparency, to assess whether the country’s attempts to stamp out corruption have been a success. She also looks at education reforms which include compulsory English lessons, visits the ancient burial site in Dmansi, where early human fossils dubbed homo georgicus were found and, of course, casts an eye on the nation’s fascination with the sport of wrestling.

This latest instalment of Eye On continues its global journey which to date has included France, Germany, Macedonia, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Nigeria Bahrain, Oman, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan.
