The future of Georgian tea production

During the Soviet period Georgian tea met almost the entire demand for tea in the Soviet Union. Today Georgia produces between four and five thousand tons of tea and covers only 15% of the local market share. If properly managed, Georgian tea could again be exported and satisfy the local market as well. Serious efforts need to be taken however, as today Georgian tea competes with Azeri, Chinese and Indian teas. Serious investment could revive this sector but needs government support.
