Most analysts who discuss the social structure of the Georgian population are unanimous in saying that there is a very small middle class and high levels of poverty. Independent analyst Soso Tsiskarishvili stated that today in Georgia 40-45% of people are extremely poor, around 30% more or less poor, about 15% middle class and 3-5% rich. It should be mentioned that in western countries the middle class creates the backbone of society and amounts to over 70%.
