The state statistical service reports that about half of the Georgian population, 2.8 mln people, live in rural areas, though employment is better in rural areas than in the towns. Unemployment in Tbilisi is 29%. That means that every third person is unemployed. Unemployment in rural areas is around 8-9%. This should be explained by the fact that in agricultural districts people are self employed. However the productivity of self employed people is very low. The agricultural sector brings to GDP around 7.3%. The income of the rural population is also very low.
