European Union officials have asked that the government of Georgia do more to combat monopolies, as the country currently lacks legislation or civil society oversight on this issue.
Critics accuse government officials of using their positions to lobby for businesses, and create policies that encourage or support monopolies. The government has yet to take any steps towards anti-monopoly legislation, and analysts note that the current business climate is harming small- and medium-sized enterprises, sometimes in the interests of bigger business.
