American analyst identifies regional security concerns

Ariel Cohen, an analyst from the US-based Heritage Foundation, has commented on the situation in the South Caucasus.

He called the region more stabile when compared with 20 years ago, but noted that security challenges remain. Cohen highlighted that the major threat of possible destabilization comes from Iran and Russia. Russia, in particular, is trying its best to hinder the development of the Caucasus as a supplier of energy resources to Europe and the rest of the world.

He also highlighted the importance of the US in supporting reforms in Azerbaijan and transparency in that country's governance system, noting the need for a resolution of the Karabakh conflict for further development of the region.
