According to official data, approximately 40,000 hectares of wheat was planted in 2012.
Since the Soviet Union collapses, the largest yield in Georgia was almost 300,000 tonnes in 2001, 35% of the total consumption of the country. In 2003, the yield was 225,000 tonnes, which covered 24% of total consumption. However, in 2011 Georgian wheat covered only 9% of the country's consumption.
The government hopes that an American variety of wheat will give higher returns. Agricultural analysts believe that the government needs to pay greater attention to that sector, in order to make Georgia more independent.
