NGO claims Georgia has most political prisoners in Europe

Chair of the NGO Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights Nana Kakabadze says that Georgia has the largest number of political prisoners in Europe, Rezonansi reports.

Kakabadze made the statement at Parliament, during a meeting with opposition party Georgian Troupe and other NGOs. She claims that before the Rose Revolution, political prisoners numbered 6000; today that number is 25,000.

She asserted that Georgia cannot claim to be democratic with such a record, especially since non-democratic states such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Belarus have "two to three" fewer prisoners than Georgia.

Georgian Dream confident government will not disturb Kutaisi rally

The Georgian Dream opposition coalition is preparing for their large-scale rally, scheduled for June 10 in Kutaisi. Coalition representative Tina Khidasheli told Alia that the government will attempt to "disturb" the protest, but lacks the "levers" to do so.

“We should all come to Kutaisi and we should show them how many we are, so that the administration does not do something stupid on that day. They saw the rally in Tbilisi, how many people [participated], and the same will be in Kutaisi. If we take into account the number of people who have joined us we can say that the administration is panicking. Those things that are inevitable, nothing can stop them,” Khidasheli declared.
