Some problems in collecting wheat

Despite the promise by current administration that the state would provide farmers with the appropriate technical facilities, problems still remain. Small farmers cannot afford tractors and combines so farmers are doing the best they can do. Analysts believe that the wheat yield will be around 75 thousand tons. The Minister of Agriculture promises 100 thousand tons. However, even if this figure is realized, the country still needs to import wheat to meet its needs. The area where wheat is grown continues to decrease in Georgia. The government has promised that it would satisfy the country’s demand by 35% with local wheat. Unfortunately, the 2011 yield satisfied only around 9% of the local demand. Georgia needs at least 800, 000 tons of wheat annually. 700, 000 tons is imported into the country mostly from Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
