Dariali hydro electric power station protested

Last December construction ofthe Dariali hydro-electric power station started. The project is to be finished by 2014. Its capacity will reach 100.10 megawats. Part of this will be used in Georgia and the rest will be exported. The company Dariali Energy is building the power station. This decision will create many serious ecological problems for the local environment, analysts claim. Analysts complain that no serious environmental impact studies were was carried out giving recommendations for preserving the landscape, biological diversity, as well as cultural, ethnographical and tourist attractions. The analysts also point out that Georgia will not be receive serious financial benefits whereas many factors are at risk. Government officials meanwhile ignore the criticism saying that there are minimal ecological risks promising that the country will receive many important benefits.
