The Georgian government decided that from September 1st pensions for people 67 and older will increase to 155 GEL per month and additionally each of them will receive an insurance policy of 15 GEL. Accordingly the state budget has been increased by 70 million GEL this year. However there is no precise information about exactly how many people benefit from this program. According to government statistics there are approximately 123,000 pensioners between the ages of 65-69. It is unclear how many pensioners are 67 or older. As for the number of pensioners above 70 the numbers are even less reliable. Since the average life span in Georgia is 67 the numbers are always in flux. Even with the increases many analysts are skeptical that elderly people will be able to live on their pensions..
