The German ambassador to Armenia has suggested that if Armenia joins the proposed Eurasian Union it might hinder their chances of joining the EU. Armenia already belongs to the EU's Eastern Partnership Program along with Georgia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova. The German ambassador stated that by joining the Russian-backed Eurasian Union Armenia might find it more difficult to comply with EU regulations, particularly those involving free trade. Compliment with all EU regulations is a prerequisite for any country wishing to join the European Union.
