Mikheil Saakashvili Congratulates Barack Obama on Being Re-Elected for a Second Term
The President of Georgia congratulated President Barack Obama on his victory in the U.S. presidential election earlier this week. Mikheil Saakashvili wished his American colleague success and the American people peace, prosperity and advancement on behalf of the Georgian people.
"Let me once again express my personal gratitude, and that of the Georgian people, for the indispensable support of the United States for Georgia’s democratic development, economic development, and national security, including unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and our NATO aspirations. I am confident that the partnership between Georgia and the United States under the U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership Charter will deepen further in the future, as will the close and ever-expanding ties between our people." Saakashvili's congratulatory note reads.
The U.S. Presidential Elections were held in the U.S. on November 6th. President Obama defeated Republican candidate Mitt Romney and won a second term in office. (IPN)
Davit Darakhvelidze – If Refugees Don’t Leave Areas MIA Will Get Involved in the Process
Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees Davit Darakhvelidze states that if the refugees who have illegally occupied buildings of various institutions don’t leave on their own, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will get involved and they will have to leave after special operative procedures.
“Mass occupations of various buildings by IDP's started after the October 1st elections, and unfortunately this has continued. By now, there are a total 1941 families occupying 51 buildings. On November 6th we gave them 10 days to vacate the illegally occupied buildings. The Ministry has alternative areas for those who are in urgent need of accommodation. We’ll offer places in Tbilisi for those who are resident here, the rest will have to return to where they lived before. If they don’t leave the buildings on their own, the MIA will get involved in this process and the areas will be cleared using special operative procedures”, Davit Darakhvelidze said.
He said there is a category of refugees who have occupied buildings but actually have residences.
“The Ministry has no exact statistics, as they have not registered their apartments with their real names. Since we can’t prove this by the public registry the MIA has been sent certain documents to clarify the issue.” Darakhvelidze said. (IPN)
Azeri citizen arrested for attempting to smuggle gold from Turkey to Georgia
Law enforcement agents at Tbilisi International Airport have arrested an Azeri citizen for trying to smuggle 4.2 kg of gold from Turkey to Georgia. Shirzan Galandarov did not fill in the special declaration form upon entering Georgia; therefore, the gold has been confiscated by police officers. Galandarov has been interrogated by the authorities and is prohibited to leave Georgia until the investigation is over. (Rustavi 2)
Photo and Video Recording May be Allowed in Court
Photo and video recordings may be allowed in court, the Ministry of Justice announced at a press conference at the Radisson Hotel. The courts are now obliged to provide audio recording of trials. The Deputy Minister of Justice Aleksandre Baramidze stated that the Georgian Public Broadcaster will be able to take photographs and video recordings during trials.
“Georgian Public Broadcaster has the right to take photos, video and audio recordings and transmissions apart from those trials that are closed to the media on the court's orders. The broadcaster is obliged to give recordings to other mass media sources on demand. This right may be restricted by a court order" the Ministry of Justice's statement reads. The changes will be made to the laws on Georgia's courts. (IPN)
Prime Minister preparing for a visit to U.S.
Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili is preparing for a visit to the United States. He told reporters he would be notified of the exact date of his visit within the next few days.
According to the Prime Minister, Americans are great friends of Georgia and both Republicans and Democrats are helping Georgia.
"Americans are great friends of Georgia. Both Republicans and Democrats are our friends. This year is a year of democrats. The Georgian Dream also has a democratic name and colors." Bidzina Ivanishvili said (IPN)
